Together we will explore the central images of light and silence in the morning prayer service. What do traditional sources and religious poetry add to our understanding of these images? How is the mode of prayer a commentary on the words of prayer? Many struggle when reciting these blessings as they call upon individuals to thank God for that which we are not. We will look at Birkat HaShakhar, the first blessings of the morning. We will explore the place of these brahkot in history and halakha. We will then look to various responses of contemporary thinkers as they attempt to reconcile modern sensibilities with these particularistic blessings.
