About Drisha

The Drisha Institute for Jewish Education is the foremost center for the advanced study of Jewish classical texts by women in an open and thoughtful environment. We provide the opportunity to encounter Jewish texts in a serious, intellectually rigorous and inclusive manner through specialized courses, lectures, and an emphasis on havruta [partner] study. Drisha has grown significantly in scope and impact since its founding in 1979 and its graduates serve as educators, scholars and leaders in the Jewish community and the world at large.  Drisha's continuing education programs are a key community resource and its Beit Midrash is open to all.

Founder Rabbi David Silber's vision is to create "a more reflective and committed community." Currently, Drisha offers full time programs for women who wish to spend from one to three years studying in its Beit Midrash. In addition, Drisha offers unique winter and summer high school programs for girls, continuing education classes and lectures for women and men, a Bat Mitzvah and Beyond program, classes for engaged couples and fellowships for professional women in the arts.

Drisha has profoundly affected the lives of the thousands of women and men from New York and around the world who have taken its classes and learned with its exceptional faculty.  The long-term impact of Drisha on the worldwide community is reflected in the informed voice and active leadership of Drisha alumni and students. We take great pride in the large numbers of Drisha participants who are transforming their communities. They address issues at public forums; develop curricula in Jewish schools; and shape community initiatives that foster spiritual growth and knowledge.
